George Mackay Brown, born on October 17, 1921, in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, was a celebrated poet, novelist, and playwright known for his vivid portrayals of Orkney life and its history. Raised in Stromness, Brown was inspired by the rugged landscapes, local lore, and Norse heritage of his home, themes that permeate much of his work. After studying at Newbattle Abbey College under the mentorship of Edwin Muir, Brown later attended the University of Edinburgh, where he further honed his literary talents.
His body of work includes renowned books such as "Greenvoe" and "Magnus," which explore the intersection of myth and reality, capturing the essence of Scottish island culture. A master of both prose and poetry, Brown's writing is marked by its lyrical quality and deep sense of place.
