St John published her first novel, "The Women in Black," in 1993. The novel, set in a 1950s Sydney department store, was praised for its wit and insightful depiction of the everyday lives of its female characters. She followed it with several more novels, including "A Pure Clear Light" and "The Essence of the Thing," which showcased her keen eye for human relationships and social nuances.
